Fergus Falls, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — Cyrus Lee Olson faces two felony charges after an incident at the Otter Tail County Detention Facility.
The charges include fourth-degree assault of a peace officer and attempted escape from custody.
The incident happened September 4, 2026, according to a criminal complaint filed in Otter Tail County.
Complaint Describes Attempt to Leave Cell Area
According to the complaint, a corrections officer entered Olson’s cell to collect a meal tray.
Olson allegedly refused to hand the tray to the officer.
The complaint says Olson then moved past the officer and ran toward the jail’s booking area.
The corrections officer followed Olson and tried to restrain him.
Authorities say Olson continued resisting as he moved toward an elevator area.
He then turned and ran back toward the booking area, according to the complaint.
The officer continued trying to stop Olson during the incident.
The complaint says the officer fell and struck a knee on the concrete floor.
Other jail staff arrived as Olson allegedly reached toward a booking-area door.
Staff then brought Olson to the ground and stopped the attempted escape.
Officer Reported Knee Injury
Police investigated the incident the following day.
The injured corrections officer was holding an ice pack against the knee, according to the complaint.
The officer reported knee pain following the struggle.
Investigators also interviewed Olson after advising him of his rights.
The complaint says Olson admitted grabbing the officer’s arms and moving past the officer.
He allegedly told investigators he was trying to get away from the jail.
The complaint also states Olson admitted he intended to escape.
Two Felony Charges Filed
Olson is charged with fourth-degree assault of a peace officer causing demonstrable bodily harm.
That felony carries up to three years in prison.
It also carries a possible fine of up to $6,000.
The second charge is attempted escape from custody.
That felony carries up to two-and-a-half years in prison.
It also carries a possible fine of up to $5,000.
