Fosston Woman Killed in Clay County Crash

Clay County (trfnews.i234.me) — A 19-year-old Fosston woman died in an early Friday morning crash.

A 21-year-old Sisseton, South Dakota, man suffered life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened around 1:41 a.m. on September 25, 2026.

Authorities responded to the 10000 block of 90th Avenue North in rural Clay County.

Cell Phone Automatically Reports Crash

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office learned about the crash through an automatic cell phone notification.

Dispatchers reportedly heard what sounded like someone moaning in the background of the alert.

Deputies and other emergency crews were immediately sent to the area.

When responders arrived, they found a vehicle that had left the roadway.

The vehicle had struck a power pole, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two people were found inside the vehicle.

The 19-year-old woman from Fosston was a passenger in the vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

The 21-year-old Sisseton man was identified as the driver.

He suffered serious injuries described as life-threatening.

Sanford Ambulance transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not released either person’s name.

The Minnesota State Patrol was called to reconstruct the crash.

Investigators are working to determine exactly how the vehicle left the roadway.

Preliminary information indicates speed may have contributed to the crash.

Investigators also believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

The findings remain preliminary while the investigation continues.

No additional information about the vehicle was included in the initial report.

Authorities plan to withhold the victims’ names until relatives have been notified.

The sheriff’s office said names are expected to be released Monday, September 28.
