Thief River Falls Man Sentenced in Protection Order Case

Thief River Falls (trfnews.i234.me) — Cody Mitchell Meekma, 38, has been sentenced for two protection-order violations.

Meekma received a 364-day jail sentence for each offense.

Both jail sentences were stayed for two years.

The sentences will run at the same time.

Meekma was also placed on probation to the court for two years.

Mental Health Evaluation Ordered

The court ordered Meekma to remain in custody until a mental health evaluation is completed.

He must also complete a comprehensive assessment.

Meekma must follow the recommended level of treatment and aftercare.

The sentence also allows a police escort for Meekma to enter certain property.

The escort may be used so he can obtain personal possessions.

Meekma was ordered to pay $240 in fees and fines for one offense.

He was ordered to pay another $80 for the second offense.

Several other charges against Meekma were dismissed as part of the case.

They included third-degree criminal damage to property.

A fourth-degree criminal damage to property charge was also dismissed.

A charge of fleeing an officer without using a motor vehicle was dismissed.

Two domestic assault charges were also dismissed.

Those dismissed charges did not result in convictions or sentences.

Minnesota Statute 518B.01 covers orders for protection and violations.

Penalties can vary based on prior qualifying offenses and other circumstances.

The law can also require counseling or other treatment after certain convictions.
