Detroit Lakes Woman Faces Bat Assault Charges

Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) — A Detroit Lakes woman faces two felony charges following an alleged baseball bat assault.

Natalie June McGinnis Mason is charged with second-degree and third-degree assault.

Both charges accuse Mason of aiding or participating in an assault that caused substantial injuries.

The alleged attack occurred on October 4, 2025, in Becker County.

Man Found With Serious Injuries

According to the complaint, authorities responded around 11:17 a.m. after a badly injured man was reported.

The man had severe injuries to his face and head, court records state.

He initially claimed he had been struck on a highway and dropped at the property.

Emergency medical care was requested because of the extent of his injuries.

Investigators later found blood behind a utility shed and on a nearby porch.

A search warrant was obtained for Mason’s residence.

Authorities reported finding blood on a couch, wall, and ceiling.

The complaint says investigators also found items suggesting someone had attempted to clean the scene.

Those items included bloody cleaning materials, a rug, and a bottle of bleach.

Conflicting Accounts of Baseball Bat Attack

Mason later told investigators that the injured man had assaulted her earlier that morning.

She said she awakened her cousin, Calvin Dean Basswood, after that incident.

Mason initially denied hurting the man, according to the complaint.

She later said Basswood struck him with a baseball bat.

Mason also allegedly admitted trying to clean blood from the residence afterward.

Basswood was arrested and separately charged in Becker County court.

The injured man later gave investigators a different account.

He alleged Mason struck him over the head with the baseball bat.

He said Basswood then struck him in the side and leg.

The man required hospital treatment and surgery for head injuries.

His injuries included a fractured jaw, fractured orbital wall, and nasal-area fractures.

Two Felony Charges Filed

The second-degree assault charge carries up to 10 years in prison.

The complaint also lists a possible fine of up to $20,000.

The third-degree assault charge carries up to five years and a possible $10,000 fine.

The complaint says Mason’s whereabouts were unknown when prosecutors requested a warrant.

Public case information is available through Minnesota Court Records Online.

The case is filed under Becker County court file number 03-CR-25-2629.

The charges and supporting claims are allegations and do not establish guilt.

Mason is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
