FARGO, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – In a poignant move, Fargo, North Dakota’s Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney has officially proclaimed August 9th as “Savanna Greywind Day” in the city. This designation honors Savanna Greywind, a Fargo resident who was tragically murdered, and aims to raise awareness about the critical issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).
Savanna, born on August 9, 1995, lived and worked in Fargo. Her life and untimely death highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and justice for Indigenous women, who face murder rates ten times higher than the national average. The U.S. Department of Justice has noted the difficulty in accurately tracking these statistics due to incomplete data.
The proclamation aligns Fargo with Canadian efforts, where for over two decades, there have been marches and events to raise awareness about MMIW. This day will celebrate Savanna’s life and support her surviving child, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and community support.
Mayor Mahoney’s proclamation was driven by a request from Savanna’s family and supported by the Fargo Native American Commission and local community members. The city aims to honor Savanna’s memory and address the broader issue of violence against Indigenous women with appropriate programs and activities.
