Moorhead Teen Accused in Gunpoint Robbery
MOORHEAD (trfnews.i234.me) — An 18-year-old faces two felony charges after an alleged armed attack on a rural Clay County road.
Isaiah Exadrian Lee Rodriguez, 18, was charged July 24 in Clay County District Court.
He faces first-degree aggravated robbery and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
The charges remain allegations. Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Victim Reports Rural Road Attack
Deputies responded around 2 a.m. July 19 to a Moorhead home.
A man outside reported that a group had assaulted him.
The victim had fresh facial wounds and was bleeding from his mouth, according to the complaint.
He also said his cellphone was taken.
The victim told investigators he joined a group planning to shoot fireworks outside Moorhead.
They met at Romkey Park before driving south into rural Clay County.
The complaint alleges Rodriguez displayed a Glock pistol with an extended magazine.
He allegedly pointed the gun at the victim and threatened him.
Investigators said Rodriguez forced the victim to drink two shots of alcohol.
The group then allegedly forced him from the vehicle.
The victim said several people punched and kicked him while he was on the ground.
He eventually escaped and ran into a nearby field.
He reported hearing at least two gunshots behind him.
He continued running until he found a home with porch lights on.
The resident helped the victim contact authorities.
His mother later found his cellphone near northbound Interstate 29.
Video Allegedly Recorded Part of Incident
Investigators also learned that a Snapchat video may have recorded part of the incident.
The complaint says Rodriguez forced the victim to make a statement on camera.
After receiving a Miranda warning, Rodriguez agreed to speak with investigators.
The complaint says he admitted taking another passenger’s gun.
Rodriguez reportedly said a comment from the victim angered him.
He allegedly pointed the gun at the victim’s head.
He then moved the weapon aside and fired past the victim’s face, according to the complaint.
Rodriguez also allegedly admitted punching the victim.
Suspect Found at Moorhead Park
Authorities located Rodriguez early July 23 at Gooseberry Park in Moorhead.
He was found sleeping inside a vehicle and was taken into custody.
The Clay County inmate roster lists his booking time as 3:52 a.m.
Minnesota law allows up to 20 years for first-degree aggravated robbery.
The maximum fine is $35,000.
Second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon carries up to seven years.
The maximum fine is $14,000.
