Argument Turns Violent: Man Shot in Hubbard County Dispute

AKELEY, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – One man is in jail and another is in the hospital following a shooting in Hubbard County. Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes reports that a call came in just after 12:15 a.m. on Friday, with the caller claiming he had been assaulted.

The caller, 26-year-old Jonothan Smith, alleged that 25-year-old Ryder Schlagel had assaulted him. Smith informed dispatch that he shot Schlagel in the leg during the altercation.

When officers arrived at Smith’s home in rural Akeley, they found Schlagel suffering from severe bleeding due to the gunshot wound. Schlagel was airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment.

Investigations revealed that Smith and Schlagel had exchanged threatening text messages starting Thursday evening. The confrontation escalated when Schlagel and another individual arrived at Smith’s home and began pounding on the door. A physical fight ensued after Smith opened the door, during which Smith, carrying a 9mm pistol in his waistband, shot Schlagel.

Smith was arrested and charged with second-degree assault. The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

  1. Would that be self defense though? I need to go back and listen again but if he was threatening him and he assaulted him first so why is he getting charged it was definitely self defense if you ask me but I guess this justice system won't see it that way 🤷🏼‍♀️

  2. In a split decision, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that even when a person is threatened or under attack they can't brandish a deadly weapon if it is "reasonably possible to retreat." Smith could not retreat. Slam dunk and start a civil case immediately to sue the county for arresting you illegally. Habeus corpus
