Warren’s research, which he conducted alongside Barry Marshall, fundamentally altered the understanding of peptic ulcers. Prior to their work, ulcers were widely believed to be caused primarily by stress and lifestyle factors. Warren and Marshall’s discovery that Helicobacter pylori, a type of bacteria, was the main cause of these ulcers led to new treatments and won them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005.
