Moorhead Protest Seeks Answers in Ramirez Death

MOORHEAD, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) — Dozens gathered Saturday, July 11, seeking answers about Sahar Ramirez’s death.

Ramirez was found dead near the Red River on June 30. She had been reported missing five days earlier.

The protest took place outside a Moorhead business linked to Ramirez’s husband. Many attendees said they did not know the family.

Joe Morones, a friend of Ramirez, described her as humble, kind, and guided by strong values.

He said Ramirez was a good person who did not deserve what happened.

Family Calls for Answers

Ramirez’s brother, Hayder Alkhafaji, organized the demonstration. He said the family wants accountability and a full case review.

Alkhafaji said the protest addressed concerns beyond his sister’s death. He said families affected by abuse deserve support and protection.

Dilworth Police investigated a 2022 domestic abuse case involving Ramirez’s husband. Police later recommended three charges to Clay County prosecutors.

Prosecutors declined to file those charges more than a year after the recommendation. No charges resulted from that earlier investigation.

Taha Alkhafaji, another brother of Ramirez, said the decision caused anger and heartbreak within the family.

He said relatives felt their concerns had not received enough attention.

Community Members Join Protest

Jayne Groneberg attended despite having no earlier connection to Ramirez or her family.

Groneberg said her own experience with psychological abuse led her to support the demonstration.

She said long-term abuse caused lasting harm and eventually contributed to her disability.

Other attendees also called for closer attention to domestic violence concerns. They said victims and families need clear answers from public agencies.

Investigation Remains Open

Moorhead Police said the investigation into Ramirez’s death remains open.

Toxicology results were still pending at the time of the protest.

Authorities have not announced a cause or manner of death. They also have not announced charges connected to Ramirez’s death.

The case remains under review by Moorhead Police. Updates may be posted on the department’s official website.

Residents can also review information from the Clay County Attorney’s Office.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence can seek confidential support through the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
