Cass Lake Man Faces Driving-After-Cancellation Charge

CASS LAKE (trfnews.i234.me) — Jerod Wesley Howard faces two traffic charges in Cass County District Court.

The charges follow an early-morning traffic stop on May 6, 2026, in Cass Lake.

Howard is charged with driving after cancellation as being inimical to public safety. The charge is a gross misdemeanor.

He also faces a misdemeanor charge for failing to provide proof of vehicle insurance.

Traffic Stop Began Over Taillights

A Leech Lake Tribal Police officer was patrolling Cass Lake around 3:23 a.m., according to the complaint.

The officer saw a vehicle traveling south on 61st Avenue. The complaint says the vehicle had no working taillights.

The officer activated emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped briefly near John Moose Drive.

It then turned north and continued toward Morningstar Lane. The vehicle later stopped near that intersection.

Driver Initially Declined To Identify Himself

The complaint says the officer approached the driver and requested identification and proof of insurance.

The driver initially declined to answer questions. He also declined to provide a license or insurance information.

The driver later identified himself as Jerod Wesley Howard, the complaint states.

Dispatch reported that Howard’s driving privileges were canceled as being inimical to public safety.

Dispatch also reported an active Hubbard County warrant, according to the filed complaint.

The complaint notes a strong marijuana odor from the vehicle. No drug charge appears in this complaint.

Charges Filed In Cass County

The driving charge falls under Minnesota Statute 171.24.

The complaint lists a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

The insurance charge falls under Minnesota Statute 169.791.

That charge carries a listed maximum of 90 days, a $1,000 fine, or both.

The new matter is filed under Cass County court file 11-CR-26-620.

The complaint also cites another pending Cass County case involving alleged DWI test refusal.

It says Howard was under release conditions in that matter. A violation notice was filed with the court.

Criminal charges are allegations. Howard is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
