Roseau Woman Charged In Fatal Badger-Area Crash

Roseau County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Roseau woman is charged after a fatal crash near Badger, Minnesota.

Shayleigh Jade McKay, 21, of Roseau, is named in a Roseau County District Court complaint.

She faces one felony count of failing to stop after a collision involving injury or death.

She also faces two gross misdemeanor DWI counts.

The case is filed in Minnesota’s 9th Judicial District under Court File No. 68-CR-26-280.

Charges Filed After Fatal Crash

The complaint says the crash happened on or about May 7, 2026.

Authorities said the incident happened near 420th Avenue and 290th Street in Roseau County.

The felony count alleges McKay failed to stop at the scene.

The complaint says the collision resulted in the death of another person.

Under Minnesota Statute 169.09, drivers must stop after certain collisions.

That law also requires drivers to reasonably check what was struck.

Complaint Details DWI Allegations

According to the complaint, a red Kia was linked to the crash investigation.

Authorities later stopped a red Kia near a residence east of Badger.

The complaint says the vehicle was being driven without headlights or taillights.

Authorities alleged McKay showed signs of impairment during the stop.

The complaint says she had slow and slurred speech.

It also says she appeared off balance while looking for her license.

McKay allegedly admitted to drinking Captain Morgan rum that evening.

The complaint says she later provided a breath test sample of .16 BAC.

The DWI counts cite Minnesota Statute 169A.20.

The complaint also cites Minnesota Statute 169A.26 for the aggravating factor.

Witnesses Describe Red Car

The complaint says Ashely Erickson and Casey Anderson lived near the crash scene.

They reported seeing a red car with a loud exhaust.

They said it turned onto 290th Street.

They also reported it appeared to be racing a motorcycle.

The witnesses said the car then braked hard and left shortly after.

McKay later told authorities she had been at the scene, according to the complaint.

She said she asked a man in a white truck if he was okay.

She also said she asked if law enforcement should be contacted.

The complaint says McKay denied seeing an accident or a motorcycle.
