Detroit Lakes Driver Faces Insurance Charges

Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me) — A Detroit Lakes man is facing two gross misdemeanor charges after a March traffic stop in Becker County.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Becker County District Court, Memphis Jerdan Lerud is charged with failure to provide proof of insurance and intent to escape taxation.

The case was filed in Minnesota’s 7th Judicial District under court file number 03-CR-26-877.

Traffic Stop In Detroit Lakes

The complaint says the stop happened on March 14, 2026, at about 7:02 p.m.

A patrol officer reported seeing a Chevrolet Suburban near Terry Street and Richwood Road in Detroit Lakes.

Authorities said the vehicle had Minnesota license plate GVT 802.

The complaint states the vehicle registration had expired in August 2025.

The officer stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Memphis Jerdan Lerud.

Insurance And Tax Allegations

Court records say Lerud told the officer the vehicle was not insured.

The complaint also alleges Lerud had prior insurance violation convictions.

Those earlier incidents allegedly happened on May 27, 2024, and September 10, 2024.

Under Minnesota law, failure to provide proof of insurance can carry stronger penalties after prior convictions.

The insurance charge was filed under Minnesota Statute 169.791.

The second charge alleges intent to escape taxation on a motor vehicle.

That charge was filed under Minnesota Statute 168.35.

Each charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

Case Remains In Court

The charges are allegations at this stage.

Lerud is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
