Mahnomen Man Charged In Drug DWI Case

Mahnomen (trfnews.i234.me) — A Waubun man is facing gross misdemeanor DWI charges in Mahnomen County District Court.

According to a criminal complaint, Gage Colin Sargent, 36, was charged with second-degree driving while impaired. He was also charged with third-degree driving while impaired.

Both charges allege Sargent was under the influence of a controlled substance. The complaint says the incident happened on May 28, 2026, in Mahnomen.

Traffic Stop In Mahnomen

The complaint says a White Earth Police officer saw a vehicle leave an area known to law enforcement. The vehicle allegedly failed to stop before entering East Lincoln Avenue.

Court documents say the vehicle then failed to stop at another stop sign. It also allegedly made a wide right turn into the oncoming lane.

The officer followed the vehicle and reported it was moving very slowly. The vehicle later failed to stop behind another stop sign, according to the complaint.

The driver also allegedly failed to signal at least 100 feet before turning. A traffic stop was then started on East Jefferson Avenue.

The driver was identified as Gage Colin Sargent. He was the only person in the vehicle, according to court documents.

Officer Reported Signs Of Impairment

The complaint says Sargent had very large pupils. They were also slow to react to light, according to court records.

The officer also reported that Sargent was sweating heavily. The complaint says Sargent had trouble following simple directions after the stop.

Sargent told police he was taking Suboxone and Gabapentin, according to the complaint. He also said he normally wore glasses or contacts.

Court documents say Sargent denied any physical problems. He allegedly swayed while standing during the stop.

The complaint says field sobriety tests were then given. Sargent allegedly started one test too early and missed heel-to-toe steps.

During another test, he allegedly hopped, swayed, put his foot down, and used his arms for balance.

Vehicle Search And Blood Draw

During a vehicle search, police reported finding a sterile water tube top. They also reported finding a disassembled pen.

The complaint says the pen is commonly used for snorting narcotics. Police then arrested Sargent for driving while impaired.

Sargent was taken to the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office. A search warrant was later approved for a blood sample.

Sargent agreed to provide the sample after receiving the warrant, according to the complaint. Two vials of blood were collected at Mahnomen Health Center.

The case was filed in Mahnomen County District Court. The court file number is 44-CR-26-305.

The complaint says Sargent had two prior DWI-related license losses within ten years. One was from 2020, and one was from 2025.

Second-degree DWI and third-degree DWI are listed as gross misdemeanors under Minnesota law. More information is available through the Minnesota Revisor for Minnesota Statute 169A.20, 169A.25, and 169A.26.

A criminal complaint is only an allegation. Sargent is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
