Mahnomen Pursuit Leads To Felony Charge
Mahnomen County (trfnews.i234.me) — Ryan Daniel Melby is facing a felony charge after a short pursuit in Mahnomen County.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Mahnomen County District Court, the case stems from May 9, 2026. The incident happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. near Mahnomen.
The complaint says a White Earth Police Department officer saw a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier leave a Cenex station quickly. The vehicle allegedly had no rear license plate displayed.
The officer then followed the vehicle toward U.S. Highway 59. The complaint says the vehicle was later clocked at 73 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in that area was 60 miles per hour.
Traffic Stop Attempted On Highway 59
Authorities say emergency lights were activated for a traffic stop. Instead of stopping, the vehicle allegedly turned onto 150th Street and accelerated.
The complaint says the officer then activated a siren and pursued the vehicle. The pursuit continued for about one to one and a half miles.

The vehicle eventually stopped. The driver was identified in court records as Ryan Daniel Melby.
According to the complaint, Melby exited the vehicle when ordered. He allegedly told law enforcement he fled because he “panicked.” He also allegedly called it a “stupid idea.”
Charges Filed In Mahnomen County
Melby is charged with felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. The charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 609.487.
The complaint says the felony charge carries a maximum sentence of three years and one day. It may also carry a $5,000 fine, or both.
Melby is also charged with misdemeanor driving after revocation. That charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 171.24.
A third count alleges speeding. That charge is listed under Minnesota Statute 169.14.

The charges are accusations. Melby is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
