Bemidji (trfnews.i234.me) — A Bemidji man is facing a gross misdemeanor traffic charge after a late-night vehicle contact.

Derrick James Carrier is charged in Beltrami County District Court with driving after cancellation.

The case is filed in Minnesota’s 9th Judicial District under court file 04-CR-26-867.

The charge stems from an April 17, 2026, incident in Bemidji.

Durango Reported In Bemidji

According to the complaint, law enforcement received radio traffic at about 12:22 a.m.

The report involved a white Dodge Durango with Leech Lake license plates.

The complaint says the vehicle had left a residence with someone’s credit cards inside.

The vehicle was reportedly headed toward Carter Circle.

Carrier and J. Kingbird were listed as occupants in the reported vehicle.

An officer later saw the distinct taillights of a Durango from several blocks away.

The vehicle was seen near the 1500 block of Bemidji Avenue.

The officer caught up with the white vehicle, according to court documents.

The Durango turned into a parking lot at 1106 Paul Bunyan Drive South.

License Status Checked

The officer made contact with Carrier as he exited the vehicle.

Carrier was told the reason for the contact, according to the complaint.

Carrier allegedly said he was unsure if the cards were inside the vehicle.

Authorities were later advised that Carrier’s driving privileges were canceled.

The complaint says the cancellation was listed as inimical to public safety.

Authorities were also advised that Carrier had active warrants.

A driving record check showed Carrier’s privileges were canceled on August 8, 2024.

The complaint says that status remained in place on the offense date.

Charge Filed In Court

Carrier is charged under Minnesota Statute 171.24.

The charge is listed as driving after cancellation.

It is classified as a gross misdemeanor.

The maximum sentence is 364 days in jail.

The charge also carries a possible $3,000 fine, or both.

The complaint lists prior convictions and pending cases in Carrier’s criminal history.

Those include past DWI, drug possession, check forgery, and fleeing convictions.

The new charge is only an accusation at this stage.

Carrier is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
