Pembina County (trfnews.i234.me) — An 18-year-old man was injured in a reported accidental shooting Sunday afternoon near Drayton, North Dakota.
Emergency responders were called to a rural area northeast of Drayton, south of the Drayton Dam, next to the Red River. Radio traffic indicated that a young man had been shot in the side. He reportedly lost consciousness for a time but was breathing again when help was requested.
First responders treated the victim at the scene before transport to a medical facility. Officials say he had an exit wound. His exact condition and hospital location have not yet been released.
Initial emergency radio reports suggested the shooting was accidental. One local outlet noted that hunting accidents can happen during busy fall seasons along the river bottom. Investigators have not said whether the incident involved hunting or target shooting.
The Pembina County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Other agencies may assist as needed while officers review statements, examine the scene, and work to confirm how the gun discharged. More details are expected once family members are notified and reports are complete.
Authorities reminded residents to follow basic firearm safety rules. Those include always treating every gun as loaded, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and knowing what is beyond the target. Hunters and shooters are also urged to wear high-visibility clothing and make sure everyone in the group understands the plan before any shot is fired.
Information on hunter education and firearm safety in North Dakota is available through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. General gun safety guidance is also posted by the Project ChildSafe program.
Further updates on this incident are expected from the Pembina County Sheriff’s Office as the case remains under active review.
