PIKE BAY TOWNSHIP, Cass County (trfnews.i234.me) — One man was hurt after a two-vehicle crash on westbound Highway 2 on Wednesday afternoon. The crash happened near milepost 129 at 2:43 p.m. on November 26. The Minnesota State Patrol released details later that day.

According to the State Patrol, a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 pickup was driving west on Highway 2 when a pallet fell from the truck bed. The driver pulled onto the shoulder. He then began backing up to retrieve the pallet. A 2002 Ford Taurus, also westbound, then struck the rear of the pickup. Road conditions were listed as snow and ice. The public crash record can be viewed on the
Minnesota State Patrol site.

The Ford Taurus was driven by Michael Alfred Souder, 60, of Bemidji. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Bemidji Hospital for treatment. The report says he was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not involved.

The Chevrolet pickup was driven by Franklin Warren Sam, 35, also of Bemidji. He was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol was not a factor.

Both vehicles remained on the shoulder after the crash. Snowy and icy conditions made the roadway slippery. The crash report states that information is believed to be complete. The last update came at 4:48 p.m. on November 26.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Leech Lake Ambulance assisted with medical care. Bob’s Towing removed one of the vehicles from the area. Drivers in the region are urged to use caution as early winter weather creates hazardous road conditions. Road and travel updates are available through the Minnesota 511 system.

State officials remind drivers to secure cargo and avoid backing on highways. Roadway dangers increase when motorists make unexpected maneuvers.
