Moorhead (trfnews.i234.me) Daisy Mae Butcher, 44, of Moorhead, faces two felony assault charges. Police say a stabbing sent a woman to the ICU.

What the police say happened

Police say Butcher arrived at the Moorhead Public Safety building around 1:28 am on January 9, 2026. She carried an open bottle of vodka. Officers said she looked intoxicated. Officers also said she was moaning in pain.

Police say Butcher admitted to heavy drinking that night. She also said she took too much Clonazepam. Officers said she repeated, “I think I killed my sister.”

Investigators say Butcher gave officers an address on 18th Street in Moorhead. Officers went to the area and found a woman outside an apartment complex. The woman was unconscious and unresponsive. Officers reported heavy bleeding.

Police said the victim had a stab wound under her left armpit. The wound was about one inch long. Police said the victim’s clothes were soaked with blood.

Officers searched an apartment tied to the call. The complaint lists the resident as Victim 2. Police reported a mattress and bedding soaked with fresh, wet blood.

Victim’s condition

The victim was taken to an Essentia facility for treatment. She was later listed in stable condition in the ICU.

The victim later spoke with investigators at the hospital. She said she and Butcher had been friends for years. She said Butcher stabbed her inside the apartment. She said she was then forced outside while screaming.

Charges and bail

Butcher is charged with First-Degree Assault, Great Bodily Harm. The complaint cites Minn. Stat. § 609.221.

She is also charged with Second-Degree Assault, Dangerous Weapon. The complaint cites Minn. Stat. § 609.222.

Court records say blood was smeared on Butcher’s shoes during the first contact. Bail was set at $50,000 by Judge Tammy L. Merkins. The case was filed by warrant.
