Nelson County: Serious Crash Near Lakota
Nelson County (trfnews.i234.me) — A two-vehicle crash near Lakota left one man seriously injured Tuesday afternoon, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The collision happened around 4:15 p.m. on September 16, 2025, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and North Dakota Highway 1. Investigators say a 2017 Volvo truck tractor with a trailer was traveling east on Highway 2 when a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, heading south on Highway 1, crossed into its path.
The truck struck the Jeep, sending both vehicles into the south ditch. The Jeep’s driver, an 83-year-old Lakota man, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. The truck driver, a 37-year-old man from Lackawanna, New York, was not hurt. Authorities noted that the injured driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Road and weather conditions were reported as dry and clear. The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Lakota Ambulance, and Lakota Fire & Rescue assisted at the scene. The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and has not yet announced whether charges will be filed.
Officials remind drivers to always wear seat belts and stay alert at intersections, where visibility and timing are critical to safety. For more information on North Dakota traffic safety efforts, visit the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
