Walsh County, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — New details have been released about a violent confrontation involving a Walsh County deputy on Highway 81 north of Minto Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as Andrew Mattson of St. Thomas, North Dakota, was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Walsh County Jail in Grafton. Officials report that this began as a rolling domestic violence incident involving a family member before escalating into an attack on law enforcement.

Mattson is now facing a lengthy list of felony charges, including domestic violence, aggravated assault, two counts of terrorizing, reckless endangerment, assault of a peace officer, unlawful entry into a vehicle, and contact by bodily fluids. Officials note that Mattson has a prior criminal history, though details of previous cases were not immediately released.

Viewer video obtained by TRF News earlier in the week showed a man charging at a deputy near Highway 81. The video captured a struggle that took place behind a vehicle before ending with the suspect on the ground. Additional law enforcement units responded to assist in taking Mattson into custody.

A new booking photo of Mattson is not yet available. He remains in custody as formal charges are being processed. More details are expected when court documents are filed in the case.

Updates on this case will be provided as they become available. For more on North Dakota criminal law and sentencing, visit the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office.
