Fargo, North Dakota ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A Fargo man is facing felony and misdemeanor theft charges after police say he stole from the very home where he had been staying.
According to court documents, officers responded to a Fargo residence on September 15th at about 12:30 a.m. The victim reported that Jaris Lane had been staying at the home for several days. The victim told police that Lane then stole their vehicle, cell phone, and $80 in cash.
Police later recovered the stolen vehicle on the 12,200 block of Main Avenue East. Lane was arrested in connection with the theft, and officers also recovered the missing cell phone. However, the $80 cash was not recovered.
Lane is now charged with felony theft for the stolen vehicle and misdemeanor theft for the phone and money. He was booked into custody and is expected to appear in Cass County District Court.
Felony theft in North Dakota carries potential prison time and fines, while misdemeanor theft may lead to additional penalties. The case will move forward through the local court system in the coming weeks.
The Fargo Police Department reminds residents to remain cautious about who they allow to stay in their homes, as property crimes often involve individuals known to victims. More information on preventing theft and protecting personal property can be found at the Fargo Police Department website.
