Waubun, Minnesota ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A 17-year-old from Waubun has died following a rollover crash northeast of town Tuesday morning.
According to Mahnomen County Sheriff Josh Guenther, the crash occurred at approximately 8:26 a.m. on 310th Street. Responders were alerted by a cell phone crash notification system. When deputies arrived, they found a pickup truck on its side in the roadway.
The driver, identified as Cash Tibbits, 17, of Waubun, was located on the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say Tibbits was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control while navigating a turn on a gravel road. The vehicle rolled, ejecting him from the truck. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation. Officials are reminding drivers about the importance of seat belt use, particularly on rural gravel roads where rollover crashes are more common. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that seat belts save thousands of lives each year, and failure to wear one remains a leading factor in roadway fatalities.
Authorities have not indicated if any other vehicles were involved. Additional updates may be released as the investigation continues.
