Anoka County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A 44-year-old Ham Lake man is facing felony and gross misdemeanor charges after allegedly threatening a mass shooting at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.According to an Anoka County criminal complaint, Than Thanh Lu is charged with felony threats of violence and gross misdemeanor harassment. Federal authorities became involved after the FBI alerted deputies on September 10 about a series of threatening messages.

Investigators say Lu began sending texts on September 3 to the president of his former employer, API Group-NAC. The messages continued daily through September 9, filling 15 single-spaced pages with threats and grievances. Deputies arrested Lu the same day at his Ham Lake home. He declined to provide a statement.

Court documents detail that the texts included threats of lawsuits, anger directed at the U.S. government, and threats of violence. On September 8, Lu allegedly wrote: “9/11/2025 will be the day media shows up to this hospital,” and, “The only truth will come out when I die after killing myself after mass shootings at the hospital.”

He also threatened to burn down the American Embassy in Vietnam, according to the complaint. Prosecutors say Lu’s anger stems from a 2018 workplace injury and ongoing disputes over a workers’ compensation claim.

The president of API Group-NAC did not respond to Lu’s messages and instead contacted federal authorities. Investigators later collected the text messages as evidence.

Lu made his first court appearance on Friday. Bail was set at $2,500 cash with conditions, which include no contact with the victim, no firearms possession, and no use of alcohol or mood-altering substances.

If convicted, Lu faces up to five years in prison for felony threats of violence and up to one year in jail for harassment. His next court appearance is scheduled for October.
