Kidder County, North Dakota ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A deadly rear-end crash on Interstate 94 eastbound near Steele has left one man dead and another critically injured.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports the crash happened at 6:40 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, near mile marker 196. Road conditions were dry, but heavy fog was present at the time.
Investigators say a 2012 Nissan Versa driven by 20-year-old Malachi Stein of Bismarck was traveling in the passing lane at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek.
Stein was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. The Subaru’s driver, 63-year-old Scott Johnson of New Meadows, Idaho, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
Multiple agencies responded, including the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Kidder County Sheriff’s Office, Steele Fire Department, Kidder Ambulance, Metro Area Ambulance, North Dakota Game and Fish, and the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Officials urge drivers to slow down in foggy conditions and always wear a seatbelt. Learn more about seatbelt safety here.
This remains a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they are released by authorities.
