Beltrami County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A Ponemah man is facing multiple charges after giving police a false name and fleeing into the woods in an effort to avoid arrest.
According to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, on June 29, 2025, Deputy Martin Gack responded to a report of a male on a bicycle looking into car windows at 2618 Paul Bunyan Drive in Bemidji. When approached, the man claimed to be “Wendell Roy Cloud” with a matching date of birth. However, the photo associated with that name didn’t match.
The man was later positively identified as Dayton Robert Nelson, 23, who had an active arrest warrant in a separate case. Nelson fled into a wooded area but was eventually located and apprehended by deputies.
Nelson now faces:
-
Gross misdemeanor: Giving a false name to police
-
Misdemeanor: Fleeing a peace officer on foot
His criminal record includes prior convictions for receiving stolen property and tampering with vehicles.
