Paynesville, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — A domestic dispute escalated into a fatal officer-involved incident on the evening of June 2 in Paynesville, Stearns County.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Stearns Avenue after a woman reported being assaulted by her husband, who was armed and barricaded in the basement. The victim escaped with visible injuries to her head and neck.

The suspect, Larry Dale Alstead, emerged with a handgun as commands were given. Sgt. Paul Orvis, a 23-year veteran, fired twice, per the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Alstead then shot himself, later dying at the scene despite immediate medical aid.

Investigators recovered a handgun and spent shell casings. All officers were wearing body cameras.

Sgt. Orvis is now on critical incident leave, and the BCA is investigating. The agency is recommending no charges.
