49ers Release Former Viking

Cousins Rumor Is Finally

The San Francisco 49ers have begun to climb out of a 3-4 hole, winning their last two games and nibbling at the Arizona Cardinals for control of the NFC West.

49ers Release Former Viking

And they’ll continue that quest without former Minnesota Vikings defense tackle T.Y. McGill unless the 49ers re-sign him to the practice squad in the coming days.

KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweeted Wednesday, “The 49ers release T.Y. McGill.”

San Francisco initially released McGill during August roster trimdowns, but the 49ers quickly re-signed him to the practice squad. It is unclear if McGill will get another reunion call or if he’ll be free to sign anywhere in the league. Stay tuned.

McGill’s NFL resume is about as lengthy as it gets — a journeyman defender:

  • Seattle Seahawks (2015)
  • Indianapolis Colts (2015–2016)
  • Cleveland Browns (2017)
  • Kansas City Chiefs (2018)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2018)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2018)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2018)
  • Washington Redskins (2019)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2019)
  • New Orleans Saints (2019)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2020–2021)
  • Washington Football Team (2021)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2021–2022)
  • San Francisco 49ers (2022–2024)

McGill played for the Vikings in 2021, a free-agent depth addition who eventually saw action in two regular season games. He played 33 defensive snaps for the 2021 brand of Vikings.

Vikings Defensive Preseason Hero Released

Fast forward to the 2022 preseason, and McGill performed marvelously in the Vikings’ first two exhibition games against the Las Vegas Raiders and 49ers. He was injured in the final game and was expected to miss a few weeks. But preseason production be damned, the Vikings released McGill with an injury designation soon after. Most fans, at the time, thought he’d make the 53-man roster. No such luck.

These are the 49ers defensive tackles without McGill:

  • Maliek Collins
  • Jordan Elliott
  • Kevin Given
  • Khalil Davis
  • Kalia Davis
  • Evan Anderson

In the summer of 2022, CBS Sports published an article called “things we learned” around the NFL in the preseason, and McGill’s rise to prominence was mentioned by author Jordan Dajani. He wrote about McGill, “Something that stood out to me was T.Y. McGill. He had five total tackles and 1.5 sacks this weekend after recording two sacks last week. McGill looks like he has a high motor. If he doesn’t win on his initial move, he will just keep pushing until he breaks through.”

Sans McGill, San Francisco takes on the Seattle Seahawks at home this Sunday and is expected to win by a touchdown.

McGill will turn 32 later this month.
