🚨 Homeless Encampment Sets Up in Bemidji, MN to Protest Lack of Housing

BEMIDJI, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A protest encampment has emerged in Bemidji, Minnesota, on Friday evening in the railroad corridor just south of downtown. This follows the closure of the Wolf Center, a homeless shelter, for the summer. Around a dozen people, including two elders and three disabled individuals, have set up approximately six tents.

Pastor Bita and Pastor Em, spokespeople for the event, emphasized the urgent need for safe and affordable housing in the Bemidji area. “It’s crucial for everyone to have a secure place to sleep,” they stated. “We must work together to find a solution.”

Sher Ian and Sky, both homeless in Bemidji, highlighted the goals of the encampment, named Camp Necessity: abolishing anti-camping laws, securing housing for all, increasing low-income housing options, promoting autonomy in shelters, and repealing anti-solicitation laws. The encampment includes members from the Red Lake Band of Chippewa, Leech Lake, White Earth, and Pine Ridge.

Police have already visited the site and issued a notice requiring the camp to disband by Sunday afternoon, citing city ordinances. Failure to comply could result in arrests. Updates will follow throughout the weekend.
